Astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element. Its isotopes are radioactive and short-lived, making it difficult to produce and study the element and find practical uses for it and its compounds. Nonetheless, its existence was predicted by Dmitri Mendeleev long before it was discovered, and researchers have found ways to produce it and some of its compounds, and to study them and look for their potential practical applications.
From a Unification perspective, we can make several points:
- As humans, we have the unique ability to predict the existence of an extremely rare element before its actual discovery, and we can be successful in our efforts to investigate it and even prepare several compounds. This ability and these efforts are manifestations of our higher intelligence, ingenuity, and creativity—attributes that are linked to our invisible, spiritual dimension.
- If our purpose in life were merely to survive from day to day on this physical plane, we would not need to know anything about astatine or its compounds. Human history shows that we can survive just fine without knowing anything about them. On the other hand, it is because of our spiritual nature that our purpose in life is higher than simple physical survival, and we have the inner desire to investigate the natural world, regardless of any practical benefits.
- Our internal drive to learn about astatine and its compounds is a natural, God-given drive that contributes toward our ability to fulfill God's "Third Great Blessing" to humanity—that of harmonizing with the creation and establishing a dominion (stewardship) of true love over it.
- Our value and our potential are much greater than the value and potential of astatine or any other material thing. Thus we need to value other people more than we value astatine or other material things. By fulfilling our potential to express God's love and way of life, we can be greater treasures than any material thing.
As we grow in our ability to bring God's love to others, we can create the climate in which others can experience and express God's love as well. In this manner, we can create an environment of peace and happiness in our world.
