Featured Article: Jerzy Kosinski

Jerzy Kosiński, 1969
Jerzy Kosinski (birth name: Josek Lewinkopf) (June 18, 1933 – May 3, 1991) was a Polish-American novelist. He is best known for his novels The Painted Bird (1965) and Being There (1971), which was made into an Oscar-winning movie in 1979. The Painted Bird was considered by some to be an important contribution to understanding the Holocaust. It reflects on the sense of alienation and cruelty in modern "civilization." It was banned in Communist Poland until the Revolutions of 1989. Being There is a satire on modern life and snobbery.

A novel is a longer work of narrative fiction compared to a novella, typically written in prose and published as a book. Recent technological developments have led to many novels also being published in non-print media: this includes audio books, web novels, and ebooks. The novel revives the tradition of the romance. "Romances" are works of fiction whose main emphasis is on marvelous or unusual incidents, and should not be confused with the romance novel, a type of genre fiction that focuses on romantic love.
