The operation was canceled when Japan surrendered following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Soviet Union's declaration of war against Japan. Operation Downfall consisted of two parts--Operation Olympic, to capture the southern third of the southernmost island of Kyūshū, and Operation Coronet, the planned invasion of the main island of Honshū.
