Featured Article: Jean-Paul Marat Marat by Joseph Boze, 1793 Jean-Paul Marat (born Mara; May 24, 1743 – July 13, 1793) was a French political theorist, physician, and scientist. A journalist and politician during the French Revolution, he was a vigorous defender of the sans-culottes, a radical voice who published his views in pamphlets, placards and newspapers. After the fall of the Girondins, in which Marat played an important role, he was assassinated by Charlotte Corday, a Girondin sympathizer, while taking a medicinal bath for his debilitating skin condition. In death, Marat became an icon to the Montagnards faction of the Jacobins as well as the greater san-culotte population, and a revolutionary martyr.
