Horse racing is defined as any equine competitive race. It can be a race either between two or more horses, or as a timed event whereby the horse's speed is measured in seconds, minutes, hours, even days or weeks (such as in endurance riding).

Primarily, horses are raced under saddle, where a rider sits atop the animal to goad it to peek speed, for example Thoroughbred racing. In other types horse races, the animal is pulling a vehicle; either a sulky (a two-wheeled racing bike, primarily used by Standardbreds), a chariot, or a chuck wagon are typical of horse-drawn racing vehicles.
