William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (February 23, 1868 – August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, sociologist, and educator, widely recognized as the foremost black intellectual and principal black protest spokesperson in the United States during the first half of the twentieth century. He excelled in college; enjoyed tenure at numerous teaching posts; produced more than 4,000 published works over the course of his life; and became an heroic exemplar to those who would eventually coalesce as the American black intelligentsia.
