Jackie Wilson

Jack Leroy "Jackie" Wilson (June 9, 1934 – January 21, 1984) was an American soul and R&B singer, born in Detroit, Michigan.

Career

Early years

Jackie "Sonny" Wilson was the only surviving child of Jack and Eliza Mae Wilson. He began singing at an early and by his teens had formed a popular gospel quartet, the Ever Ready Gospel Singers Group.

Growing up in a rough section of Detroit, Wilson was reportedly habitually truant and belonged to a gang called the Shakers. He was twice confined at the Lansing Correctional Institute, where he learned how to box, becoming a DetroitGolden Gloves champion at sixteen. He also dropped out of school in the same year.

In 1951 Wilson married Freda Hood, and a daughter was born the next month. At this time he was singing in a group that consisted of Levi Stubbs—future lead singer of the Four Tops—Sonny Woods and Lawson Smith. Wilson's hoped to be a professional boxer, but when his parents would not allow this, he began singing in loca Detroit clubs. He recorded a few solo tracks for Dee Gee label, owned by Dizzy Gillespe, as "Sonny Wilson."

After gaining a solid local reputation, he auditioned for and joined the popular Billy Ward & the Dominoes in 1953, replacing Clyde McPhatter. The group had one recording success with Wilson in June of 1956 with the single "St. Therese of The Roses," which reached number 13 on the pop charts. Previously the group had scored hits with "Stardust", (July '57), and "Deep Purple." (Oct. '57)

Wilson's solo career began with in 1957 with the exhuberant "Reet Petite," written by the then-unknown Berry Gordy, Jr.. While Gordy would go on to found Motown Records, Wilson would remain with the Brunswick label throughout his career. Wilson had his first top 40 hit in 1958 with "To Be Loved." At the end of that year he had a major success with "Lonely Teardrops." Also written by Gordy, the song went to number seven on and became Jackie's his signature tune, bringing Wilson's unique voice and exciting singing style to a wide audience. That same year saw Wilson release his first LP, titled He's So Fine.

Lonely Teardrops helped him cross over from R&B to the mainstream, having several pop hits. His dynamic stage performances earned him the nickname "Mr. Excitement." His performance of "Lonely Teardrops" on the Ed Sullivan Show is considered one of the show's classics. Two more Barry Gordy songs "That's Why (I Love You So)" and "I'll Be Satisfied"—became hits for Wilson in 1959.

In 1960, Wilson scored two additional R&B number one hits with 'Doggin' Around' and 'A Woman, A Lover, A Friend'. However, his experiments with semi-operatic records such as 'Danny Boy' or 'Night', proved unsuccessful. Returning to his uptempo R&B stye with 'Baby Workout', he scored another hit in 1963.

His career began to suffer in the mid-60s, although he managed a brief revival with "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" in (date). The revival was short-lived, though, and Wilson rarely charted in the 1970s.

Personal life

Although Wilson converted to Judaism as an adult.

Although married to Frida Hood since 1951, Wilson was a notorious womanizer and was shot and serious wounded by one of his lovers, Juanita Jones, on February 15, 1961. He remained hospitalized for more than a month, and found himself in serious financial trouble. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) seized family home and his wife soon filed for divorce. Their marriage of 13 years was annuled in 1965. In march March 1967 Jackie Wilson was arrested in South Carolina on morals charges after he and a friend were discovered in a motel with two 24-year-old white women. Later that year he married Harlean Harris, and old girlfriend with whom he had a son in 1963, and to whom he remained married until his death.

On September 29, 1975 while performing on stage in New Jersey, Wilson suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital after several minutes without breathing. He remained comatose for three months, and although he evntually regained consciousness, he never fully recovered. Some of his medical costs were reportedly paid for by Elvis Presley. Wilson never uttered another word, but clung to life for eight additional years, remaining hospitalized until his death at the age of 49 in 1984.

Wilson is interred in the Westlawn Cemetery in Wayne, Michigan.

Tributes and Legacy

In 1985, soul/funk band The Commodores recorded "Nightshift" in memory of Wilson and soul singer Marvin Gaye, who died in the same year as Wilson. Reaching No. 1 R&B and No. 3 pop in the US, it was the group's biggest post-Lionel Richie hit.

Van Morrison also recorded a tribute song called "Jackie Wilson Said (I'm In Heaven When You Smile)" on his 1972 hit album Saint Dominic's Preview. This song was later covered by Dexys Midnight Runners. When the track was performed on the British TV show Top of the Pops, a picture of Wilson was intended to be used in the background - but an intentional joke by the band and the production staff meant that a picture of darts player Jocky Wilson was used instead.

Michael Jackson honored Jackie Wilson at the 1984 Grammy Awards. Jackson dedicated his Album of the Year Grammy for Thriller to Jackie, saying, "Jackie Wilson was a wonderful entertainer...I love you and thank you so much."^[1]

Wilson is also mentioned in the rap song "Thugz Mansion" featuring Tupac Shakur and Nas. The exact lyric is:

"Seen a show with Marvin Gaye last night,

It had me shook, sippin' peppermint schnapps

With Jackie Wilson, and Sam Cooke."

Wilson scored a posthumous hit when "Reet Petite" reached number one in the United Kingdom in 1986. This success was likely due in part to a new animated video made for the song, featuring a clay model of Wilson, that became hugely popular on television. The following year he hit the UK charts again with "I Get The Sweetest Feeling" (No.3), and "Higher And Higher" (No.11).

Rita Coolidge covered "Higher and Higher" in 1977; her version outcharted Wilson's original on the US pop charts, reaching No. 2 and earning a gold record.

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987; that same year, he was portrayed in the Richie Valens biopic La Bamba by Howard Huntsberry.

In 1989, "Higher and Higher" was featured heavily in the film Ghostbusters II, the soundtrack album of which featured a cover version of the song by Howard Huntsberry.

In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #68 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.^[2]
