I would like to dispute the following phrase, “Despite his desire to emancipate his fellow countrymen, Tone had very little respect for the Catholic faith (a view shared by many subsequent Irish republicans).”

I challenge the statement, “(a view shared by many subsequent Irish republicans)”. The author gives no proof for this opinion.

Thank you for the comment. According to sources that I have consulted, Tone was an agnostic and anti-sectarian. He preferred to talk about the “Irish” than about “Protestant” and “Catholic”. The statement you cite may need to be revised. I will look again at sources and how to re-express the sentence concerned.
