Hi

I am not convinced of the accuracy of “self” appearing in the opening definition, as far as I know that is not an etymological meaning of “sam-” and it could be coming from an exegetical tradition of Brahmanical beliefs, I don’t think scholars of linguistics will accept that meaning for the prefix “sam-” (related to Latin “sym-/syn-” etc.

“The language name saṃská¹›tam is derived from the past participle saṃská¹›taḥ “self-made, self-done” of the verb saṃ(s)kar- “to make self,” where saṃ- “with, together, self” and (s)kar- “do, make.” In modern usage, the verbal adjective saṃská¹›ta- has come to mean “cultured.””

Hello !

is there a pronunciation guide by panini or some commentator of him, good for classical Sanskrit, which describes how the vowels are to be pronounced ?
For example for औ and ऐ, there are many ideas how to pronounce it, so it would be nice to have a clarifying source;

Thank You !

Christoph

Sanskrit an Ancient Language
We do believe that our Sanskrit Language is one of the oldest Language over the Earth. But we do not try to see those records to show that truth. Generally we see oldest stone carvings in Egypt Pyramids, Baudh Stupa etc. But the Oldest such Sanskrit SHILALEKH is carved in ACHALGADH in a MARBLE stone dating back to 5000 years (3000BC). Which is so discoloured over the time period of last 5000 years and also is different from the present modern Sanskrit which we read today. It is difficult to read and understand the Old Sanskrit But carving fact of the OLDEST Vedic Sanskrit writing.
Now also west Europeans also are tracing to find the roots of their languages in the Sanskrit. We have been invited by the Department of Sanskrit of the School of the Economic science to the LONDON Sanskrit meet 2013 for showing that all modern Europian languages including latin Greek, English etc have their roots of the origin in the Sanskrit.
