This article on gear rations is very detailed. But I would like to suggest that you start off by explaining what is the point. Ok, the gear ratio is the ratio between the number of teeth on the gears but why? Who cares? It would behoove you to explain the purpose such as finding out the force placed on a given endpoint in the gear chain, calculating how much power is needed to move an engine, why the transfer of greater or lesser power should require a precise gear ratio, why 1.62 instead of 4.28, why should a car’s engine have different gear ratios in the first place? Etc. If you start off with the calculations while missing the purpose, it doesn’t really help those people who are looking to your encyclopedia for information on the subject. It just helps the math majors. It may be in the original article on gears but if someone is just looking up gear ratio they aren’t earily going to find out the purpose of a gear ratio by reading the article.
