Hi,
Could you please add to this page as follows (or perhaps you have a better suggestion)?
The arXiv was originally developed by Paul Ginsparg, in part to supersede a (~2 year old, multinational) email distribution list for preprints operated manually by Joanne Cohn. It started in 1991 as a repository….
While it has grown well beyond its original roots, the arxiv started as an email distribution service, based upon the email distribution list coming from me, to replace and automate the
service I had been providing. As
the arxiv does not maintain an official history (I have been discussing this with them), I am asking online official histories to augment the record with this fact. I’m of course happy to provide more information if you need it. Please let me know. Thank you.
