play +‎ wright (“builder, craftsman”) from Middle English wrighte, wriȝte, wruhte, wurhte, from Old English wyrhta (“worker, maker”), from Proto-West Germanic *wurhtijō (as in *wurkijan), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (“to work”).
