Etymology

From paint +‎ -er, from Middle English peynten, from Old French peintier, paincter, itself from paint, the past participle of paindre, from Latin pingō (“to paint”) (perfect passive participle pictus).

painter (plural painters)

  1. An artist who paints pictures.
  2. A laborer or workman who paints surfaces using a paintbrush or other means.
  3. (nautical) Probably from Middle French pendeur. A rope connected to the bow of a boat, used to attach it to a jetty or another boat.
    • The dinghy was trailing astern at the end of its painter
    • He untied the painter and took up the oars to begin rowing.
  4. A mountain lion, by mispronunciation of "panther"
