Robert Staughton Lynd (1892 - 1970) was an American sociologist. Born in New Albany, Indiana, he is best known for writing Middletown: A Study in Contemporary American Culture (1929) and Middletown in Transition (1937). These works are known as classics of American sociology.

He was the father of the activist Staughton Lynd.

Helen Merrel Lynd (March 17, 1896 - January 30, 1982) was a U.S. sociologist and social philosopher. Author of Shame and the Search for Identity and co-author of Middletown: A Study in Contemporary American Culture with husband Robert Staughton Lynd.
