As a cultural and commercial hub, Chicago has numerous amenities that draw millions of tourists each year. Nevertheless, as in other large urban areas, Chicago has both wealthy and underprivileged neighborhoods, with wide disparities in income and services. Chicago has a higher murder rate than other large cities, much of it due to fights between gangs.
The North Side has a large gay community. Two neighborhoods in particular, Lakeview and the Andersonville area of the Edgewater neighborhood, are home to many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) businesses and organizations. The area adjacent to the North Side intersection of Halsted and Belmont is a gay neighborhood known to Chicagoans as "Boystown."
