Unification Aspects: Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot is widely credited with inventing the motor car. Employed by the French military, his interest was to move canon more rapidly and with greater ease. He may not have anticipated the domestic, peace time use of the automobile yet his pioneer use of high-pressure steam helped the development of one of the most widely used technologies in the contemporary world. With the exception of the aircraft, itself a by-product of automobile technology, the car has revolutionized human existence. The ability to travel with ease over great distances has knitted large nations together and in regions such as Europe, where within the European Union borders are open, more and more people are developing awareness of a common identity that transcends national citizenship. The imperial ambitions of Cugnot's own employer, Napoleon Bonaparte, included the unification of Europe to prevent war and the use of a common legal code. There is little doubt that the automobile has helped to break down barriers between people and to promote better transport and communication. Whole nations, including the United States have become dependent on the motor car. New technologies are now needed that overcome the problems of pollution and use of non-renewable resources. The same ingenuity that enabled Cugnot to develop his pioneer technology needs to be applied by his successors today to solve the problems that face the global community. From a Unification perspective, humanity has a divine duty to realize the unity of the human family, and to better preserve and steward the globe. Cugnot may well have made a material contribution to the first. His example may inspire others to place their genius at the service of God and humanity.
