Unification Aspects:
  • The arguments discussed by Lacydes and his contemporaries reflect many of the problems of modern epistemology and psychology. The question of the reliability of human knowledge and the accuracy of sense perception is still under debate. The statement that “memory is an opinion” is attributed to Lacydes. Modern research on the memory has revealed that the human mind frequently creates artificial memories of events, while suppressing memories of actual events. The story about Lacydes and his servants is a humorous illustration of the accusation often leveled, not only at ancient Greek philosophy, but at philosophy in general, that while it seems sound in principle, its application in daily life is impractical.
  • The Platonic Academy was a place where a variety of perspectives were freely discussed. This openness allowed the emergence of skepticism around the third to early first century b.c.e.. The skeptics, called Academic Skeptics, challenged the Stoics. Lacydes changed his position from skepticism to Platonism and turned the orientation of the Academy back towards its original direction.
