Unification Aspects:
- From the perspective of Unification Thought, the debate over innate ideas vs. tabula rasa is largely the result of an unnecessary polarization between extreme positions due to a lack of an overall vision.
- Plato’s notion of innate ideas residing in the eternal soul is an account of the presence of a blueprint for creation in the mind of the Original Being, God. It also accounts for the fact that the human mind functions according to fundamental, universal laws reflecting the nature of the Original Being.
- However, no idea can concretely be formed in a human mind apart from experience. Unification Thought would reject the notion that fully formed ideas pre-exist within the mind at birth.
- From the perspective of Unificationism, the study of the processes by which the human mind forms its basic concepts through an interaction between inborn structures and acquired data is a very important field of inquiry that requires in-depth exploration.
- Like every feature of the human nature (body shape, etc.), the basic, innate structure of the mind affects human destiny in a fundamental way. But it can and should never be used to reject the notion of freedom (the human response to destiny) or to impose ideological constructs under the pretense that they are innate.
